quite a new laptop - haven't noticed any major issues so far but when i ran my first hjt i was taken aback by how many missing files it lists. had a quick read round the internet and some folks seem to think this can be a problem - or lead to them. if anyone has a moment would appreciate your opinion. i was just about to get rid of all the powerdvd, packard bell and apple stuff but didnt want to touch it just yet.

doesn't look to me like there's any malware on - as said, its missing files.

apologies for posting the hjt log.

file attached. if it needs to be in malware can someone move it? thought it looked malware free, more of a case of overzealous cleaning had removed files. if not, i'll start another there if i need to. cheers

    Hi

Sadly this is a bug in HJT with some versions of Windows, especially Vista and more so Win7 in which HJT is miss reporting these legitimate system files as missing when they are not!

TBH this is one if the reasons I loathe HJT as many have become reliant on it for malware troubleshooting and its not a be all and end all app, its good in trained hands but does not lust all malware just a few startups and BHOs etc, In finding files tagged with "missing" it can fool the user into thinking they have a malware issue and remove those files thus killing their operating system.

thank you very much halo. i must admit that makes sense as i hadn't noticed any kind of slow functioning with the system.

the only problem i seem to have is that avg constantly shows cookies.sqlite as a problem file no matter how many times its deleted but i guess that might be something for the malware forum. many thanks again for your advice - i'm presuming there is no other strange listings in the log that indicate other issues.

    Hi

Your HJT log to me looks ok, shows one thing I would question and one I would delete

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file) ~~~ Delete this as it links to nothing, could have been a toolbar or other Browser Helper Object you have removed.

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{510C11A6-9D61-4985-A9E7-A57CEAB5EC6E}: NameServer = 8.8.8.8,8.8.4.4 ~~~ do you know what this is and do you need to for your internet connection need a specific IP address for a logon etc? if you have no idea what this is, it maybe worth running the full malware guide and starting a new thread in the malware forum with all the logs attached just to have one of our malware experts give them a look over, as I mentioned HJT is good for some things but its not a malware cleaner or can find all malware.

As for cookies.sqlite I guess you are using Firefox? as this is the location that Firefox stores its cookies, seems AVG lists them as an issue when they are not an issue, is your AVG latest version?

Some info HERE from AVG in stopping it listing cookies as an issue.

cheers again halo. will delete the bho no name, meant to do that with the apple and other stuff i dont need but didnt want to touch anything until i clarified the situation with the missing files.

the 8.8.8.8 is the public google dns server. don't really like using it but do sometimes due to the one that my isp has is terrible. seems to speed up my surfing a little if i use that one every now and again.

    Hi rorschach1791

Cheers for that info, yeah the Google DNS is ok, OpenDNS is also good.

Looks like your PC is fine in a Hijackthis log way, nothing untoward in it and think as you mention your PC is working ok your good.
