Hi all - and thanks in advance for any help you can offer; this is a great community and I (and I'm sure everybody else you've helped) am very impressed and humbled at the kind contributions made by the forum supporters.

I'm currently experiencing slow boot and shutdown times on my laptop. It's a Dell Studio 1537 with a 2.0 ghz Intel T3200 dual core processor and 2.0 gb RAM. I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit.

    Symptoms:
    - On boot, the screen goes black and stays that way for a while before the log-on splash screen. Between the log-on screen and the booting of the OS. the screen again goes black and stays that way for a while.
    - Once booted, the computer seems to run fine. It doesn't take inordinately long for programs to load.
    - The computer also takes quite a while to shut down
    - I can't load Safe Mode by pressing F8 during the initial Dell splash screen (BIOS?)
    - By choosing Safe Mode boot in MSCONFIG, it's possible to access Safe Mode. The computer boots markedly faster.

    Attempted diagnosis/repairs:
    - Clean boot does not load appreciably faster, which I take it means that none of the startup programs (except perhaps for the Microsoft services) are causing the slowdown.
    - Tried a repair install of Windows 7; no change.
    - Tried running Startup Fix from the Windows 7 DVD's repair options console. Startup time might have decreased slightly.
    - Tried the malware removal regime provided on Majorgeeks; if I remember correctly, no malware was detected. I've provided logs on this post.
    - Tried running a boot time scan with Avast! Antivirus. One piece of malware was detected; it had something to do with Sun Java. I had what I thought was a current version of Sun Java (6.0 update 22).
    - Tried to run a boot defrag using the command defrag -b %SystemDrive%. The defrag wouldn't run, so I tried the command Rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks and got a popup screen saying that I am missing advapi32.dll.
    - Manually updated whatever drivers I could find. Most drivers I got from Dell's website. I also installed ATI Catalyst mobility drivers version 10.6.

I'm at a loss as to what the problem is. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
