I know I'm going to have a lot of questions about installing W7 (Ultimate) on my Toshiba Satellite Pro P 100, RAM 2 gig, so I thought I may as well keep them in the one thread.

I'll be using a new blank hard drive. I know I'm going to have to do a clean install and have already run, and printed out, the W7 Upgrade Adviser from MS.
    Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor 2.0.5000.0
    http://majorgeeks.com/Windows_7_Upgrade_Advisor_d6076.html
My note: Not a real good rating out of 5.0 :cry :(

    Here goes anyway.

    #1 ------DrTcp
I know it is not needed in Vista and W7 as they take care of this automatically, supposedly.;)
See attachment for my current XP Pro SP3 settings.
They are vastly different from the MS defaults, and are much faster.

    Question.

Where can I go into the W7 Registry to find out what equivalent settings W7 is using?

Can I experiment/alter, them manually to compare download speeds, MS default vs custom settings?

Reason: I gained a hell of an increase in download speeds by customising, manually, my DrTcp settings in XP Pro.
NB: These are my settings based on my Broadband plan, ISP, research, trial and error and laptop specs.
They are not recommended for you.

Bear with me if I ask dumb questions as I anticipate a lot of questions as I migrate to W7. :-D

    Re: Windows 7 questions. #2

My current version of Windows Defender is flagged by the MS Windows Upgrade Adviser as not compatible with W7.

When I check out the MG link,
    Microsoft Windows Defender 1.75.1117.0
    http://majorgeeks.com/Microsoft_Windows_Defender_d4466.html
    it states: Requires: Win XP/2003

When I check out Windows Defender Definition Updates 1.87.1491.0
    http://majorgeeks.com/Windows_Defender_Definition_Updates_d5955.html
    It states Requires: Win XP/2003/Vista/Windows7

    My question: #2
I assume that I simply run the updates over my current version of Windows Defender (XP) and it then become OK for W7. Is this the way to go?

I think I'll be ready to start loading W7 Ultimate, on my current XP Pro SP3, Toshiba Satellite Pro P100 laptop, this weekend, with a new blank hard drive.

I am still very interested in something that will get the same results as tuning DrTcp (XP Pro) in W7 (see my question post #1 )

I will soon be able to check download speeds in W7 against XP pro, using Opera browser that gives the speed for each download.

Most of my current XP Pro download speeds, via Internode (Aussie mirror for MG), come out around 500-550 KB/s. If I don't get this, or better, from W7 I will know something is wrong.

I anticipate that W7 download speeds will not be as good as my current download speeds but could easily be wrong. :-D :confused

Can anyone post any links to tuning W7 download speeds, or offer any bright ideas that I should try? Thanks, in anticipation.

Thanks plastidust. I hadn't seen that link.
That article will need a hell of a lot of studying.;)
I've printed it out for some bedtime reading. :-D
