Windows 7 (SP1) Freezing/Locking Up

    Hello, I am on Windows 7 Ultimate (SP1). Recently, most notably after I installed the SP1, Windows have been freezing at random. Most often it is when I left it idle for long periods of time. When I return, I will find the whole PC to be unresponsive. I cannot be certain it always freezes after I have left it idle. No error messages have popped up so far. I will have to use the Reset button to restart the computer.

    My whole computer is new. To the best of my knowledge all parts were new. I bought it in Dec. 2010.

    I thought the freezing/locking up was caused by malware/spyware/viruses. I have completed the Malware removal procedure.

    I was unable to run Rootrepeal. That program crashed. The error log writes:

    All other logs have been attached here.

    I have also ran a scan using AVG which came up clean.

    Can an expert please advise me what can be done to stop the freezing?

    It doesn't help you at all but post SP1 I'm getting freezups too, usually when it's been idling for a while. Nothing at all in event wiewer that gives any clue. Win 7 Ult x64.

    Will any expert be able to give some advice on this issue? The past few days, I have reduced my PC's idle time, and have avoided having the system lock-up. But is there a better, more lasting solution?

    Although I haven't had any freeze-ups running Win 7 SP1 (Pro 64 and Enterprise 64), here are two quick things that may help:

    Download and run Malware Bytes:

    If it is a malware issue, it should catch and clean it. Even if it gives a clean bill of health (not solving the freeze-up issue), it can be a life saver if something gets past your anti-virus and security software.


    Check to see if your video drivers are up-to-date. It sounds strange; however I have run into a few cases in the past where an outdated video driver caused issues after major Windows updates (both XP and Win 7).

    If you're not sure what video card you have, go to CONTROL PANEL>SYSTEM>DEVICE MANAGER and click on DISPLAY ADAPTERS. It will list the chipset mfr. (ATI, NVIDIA or Intel) and series (such as 9800GT or Radeon 4850).

    Go to the video mfr's website (ati.com, nvidia.com or intel.com) and download/install the latest driver(s) for your video. Be sure to download the correct driver (32-bit or 64-bit) based on what version of Windows you're running.

    If all else fails, you can uninstall SP1 by going to CONTROL PANEL>PROGRAMS AND FEATURES, clicking on "View Installed Updates", finding "Service Pack" in the Windows Updates, clicking on it and choosing "uninstall".

    Then I suggest you go to start / run / and type:
    sfc /scannow and have your OS disc handy.

    I am sending this thread back to the software forum.

    Do the following to remove the scanning tools:

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.


    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Tim you mentioned removing all those lines (as shown in your quote box). What are those and how do I remove them?

    About the freezing issue, I did a memory diagnostic tool built into Win 7. The memory check came up clean, no errors were reported. With regards to malware/spyware, you felt I am clean there too.

    So if my PC freezes again, what can I do to unfreeze it? I am not sure using that Reset button to do it is healthy for the PC is it?

    You use windows explorer ( Right click the start button and choose explore ) and go to this folder:
    C:\Users\PC1\AppData\Local\

    Then just delete those files.

    What reset button? Are you talking about the power button or the switch on the PSU?

    Did you run sfc /scannow?
