I'm not concerned who likes or doesn't like the start menu in windows 7. For those of you that don't has anyone found any good alternatives? I don't care for the search option, I want to be able to organize folders, as you could with xp.

I can not get used to the new start menu, it is aggravating to constantly have to switch between the keyboard and mouse. It is also slow to respond if you use menus instead of links. No it is not a virus or anything of the sort. It is a fresh install, nothing else is slowed down.

    thanks

I'm not 100% sure about Windows 7, but since it is very similar to Vista, you should be able to organize folders in the Start Menu. Try going to %userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs. You should be able to organize folders to your heart's content there.

It's actually easier than XP. Create a folder on the desktop, drag your shortcuts into it, and drag it onto the Start menu.

The problem with that is, once you have the folders unless you use the recently used programs the start menu lags, the more programs you have the worse it gets. It not a performance issue related to my hardware either. I notice it on several computers. CPU usage under 10% and memory usage under 30%.

Windows 7 is more graphically intensive than XP, and so it will likely be a bit heavier, though it is certainly snappier than Vista. What kind of video hardware is the computer running? Try updating the graphics drivers.

Alternatively, if it's the look and feel you don't like, try right-clicking on the Start Menu and selecting "Classic Start Menu" as your choice. Subsequently, clicking the "Advanced" button here will take you to the folder that I previously mentioned for easier organization of the Start Menu.

Perhaps XP preloaded the icons/graphics for submenus before displaying them and Vista/7 do not? I am noticing a small delay on displaying some icons or opening some folders in the Start Menu on Vista, but it's pretty negligible. Actually, navigating through all by submenus by mouse is kind of a pain, which is why you have the option to type the name of the shortcut or executable. That aside, I don't think you're ever going to get "instant" menu transitions for performance.

Curiousity begs me to ask, what type of graphics hardware do you have?

    Integrated, or graphics card?

The card is a little light, and, as suggested, you can switch to the "Classic View".

I can say that I don't see that issue with my current hardware configuration, but, that's just personal observation.

It is a little light but wouldn't i notice problems in other areas to? It is just specifically the menus.

I have it installed on another computer it has a 1 gig card, not sure the model specifically at the moment, and i have the same issues....

When you say "the menus", do you mean all application menus, or just the Start Menu and its subfolders? As I said before, I notice a slight delay on my Start Menu subfolders when opening each one for the very first time, or if I'm already doing a million other things on the laptop, but that's about it. Though, the delay doesn't bother me because I use the search bar in the Start Menu anyway.
