    Greetings:
My computer froze during an update, upon restarting the computer I now I have a endless loop error. :***

A black screen appears with the following message.
"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.
    To fix the problem:
    1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart the computer.
    2. Choose your language settings and click next.
    3. Click "repair your computer"
If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.
    File: \Windows\system32\config\system\
    Status: 0xc000014c
Info: Windows failed to load because the system registry file is missing, or corrupt."

The computer is a gateway zx6971-ub10p, No windows installation disc was included,
(I had previously made one but am unable to find it, also don't have the box/packaging anymore). I do not care about recovery anything on the computer, I just need to get the computer working again for school. :(
Windows Memory Diagnostic found no problems, Various Safe Modes, Last Known Good Configuration, Start Windows Normally,etc... do nothing.
Was going to try http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-recovery but I don't even know my 25 character product key, no warranty from Gateway now, and no $ to take this thing somewhere.

    Is this computer toast?!? :cry

First: find the manual and see if the Gateway has a recovery partition. If it does, the manual will tell you what key to press at bootup.
You might also be able to get to it by pressing F8 at startup, when the Gateway logo shows and see if there is a recovery option there.

Your next best shot at getting back a usable computer without spending money is to find the restore/recovery DVD you made.

It won't boot from the recovery partition

Since it's Win 7, the 25 character Product Key should be somewhere on or inside the case on a sticker. It could be on the bottom of the case. If you can, and if the OS installation is OEM, see if Gateway has a re-install DVD. They may charge for it though but, nowhere near as much as a retail version.

You wouldn't believe my luck, yes there was a sticker, but I lived in cali for awhile, and shit the humidity and what not I guess the sticker peeled off along the way,.
Want to hear some dumb <snip>.
Called gateway, it is IMPOSSIBLE to talk to anyone there if you do not have a warranty and you are forwarded to a third party, pay for answers site. I said <snip> it ill ask how much they would charge to tell me my windows product key, at which point they said they don't have access to that info and they said I would have to call back gateway... OK
So Call gateway back, as soon as I called back the automated person just says, oh we see you are calling about a computer without a warranty, and then just forwards me back to the third party site.

    Bummer! :(
It looks as if you're going to have to purchase a retail version with Product Key. Ebay still has them starting at $52.50 US w/free shipping.

Eldon, the link you posted is a good program to recover a key, if the computer won't load windows there is no way to install the program, unfortunately.

If you can find someone with the same version of Windows 7 (Home, Pro, etc) and the same bitness (32 or 64) then you can use that MS DVD to repair your Gateway.
