Recently I have had several people contact me that when they did a complete reinstall of Windows 7 that it will let them do several updates. After it does the SP1 update it seems to get stuck in the searching for New Update mode for hours or days.
If anyone has this problem do not get frustrated. Microsoft has implemented these security for updates installers. It seems that the Windows updates will give you the outdated ones and when SP1 is installed it does not recognize them.
There are 8 updates I will list here from Microsoft that will correct this problem. I would install the first 5 of these. The last 3 I did for good measure, just for extra caution.

You will have to restart PC after each of these. Takes about 15 minutes depend on speed of Computer.

Save these updates to your desktop so you do not have to keep coming back here for them after each restart.

I hope this helps with all future Update problems with new install of Windows 7

One size doesn't seem to fit all with the ongoing WU saga, I've collected a few useful sites/methods, currently (because historically MS changed the goalposts monthly) the following all seem to be pertinent:

These have worked for the 7 computers I have worked with. All of which were Windows 7 Home Premium or Pro.
I am sure there are other problems.
I have not seen any W8.1 or Vista's come to me with this problem, but I will keep this in mind when I do.
    Thank you

Even after running wsus offline on a fresh install of Win 7 Ultimate x64, I had to install KB3020369 and KB3172605 to get WU to find the remaining individual updates. MS has already gone to the "Cumulative" Win 10 type updates discussed in Eldon's link for Win 7 so, if you don't want WU to hang for sevefral hours or even days while searching for updates, install those two updates after setting WU to NEVER search for updates first.

Not so wise, reposting the same thing after a deletion.

That's outdated, the Windows Update Catalog is now redirecting to the WWW version, which is browser agnostic. It's also rather long-winded.

The concise version of that I've already linked to above, it's the MS official version of the 'fix': Windows Update is taking an unusually long time to scan and install updates
