Windows 7 will not install MS updates

I have been trying to resolve this for over a week. I kept getting the 'shut down' message on the start button so I kept installing the updates. I finally discovered that all of them were failed status.
have tried safe mode, shutting completely down, tried to restore but the oldest point was more recent than the updates. I ran all sorts of antivirus/spyware programs and it did find a few, but still cannot correct this.

I have searched all over Microsoft's website for support and have followed the instructions for resetting the updater, etc, but what seems to have worked for some does not work for me.

The only updates it will install are those for Microsoft Security Essentials.
Can anyone please help?

But, using the manual method?

 

No... I had not tried the manual method. I went thru those steps and was able to re register most of those dll files but there were a few that gave errors and were not updated. I am going to run the update again anyway, and will post my results by tomorrow.

Ok I have tried all the suggestions and still it does not complete updates. Now there are 13 of them instead of 6 UGH!! I tried to do a windows repair but it says I have no restore points, no backup. It shows one from 12-13 but it says it cannot find it.
