    Hi
    My 9 year old sone got on my computer did something, now it wont boot.
    I have been working with the folks at the windowssecrets forum, who suggested I could be better helped by this fourm.

    To get to where I am now in debugging this I have tried all the basic stuff of hitting f8 to using the repair disk, tried fixing the MBR and doing a non destructive reload of windows 7, nothing has worked.

    But one of the folks at windowssecrets asked what the 0x numbers are on the BSOD, they are
    ***STOP 0x0000007B (0xFFFFF880009A9928,0XFFFFFFFFC0000034,0X000000000 0000000,0X0000000000000000)

    They said
    0x7B = inaccessible boot device iirc, and my guess is your partitions have been messed with by either a 'repair' or malware.
    Thiis makes makes sense because my son says he turned the machine off and on 6 times trying to log in, probably in the middle of a boot cycle.
    Also, bootsect did not seem to work right, it would not show all my drives.

    I have 3 drives in the machine and I can access all through the cmd prompt, including the 1 windows is installed on.

    So they guess you guys could help me get the machine booted from a cd or usb, and fix the partitions.

    Any ideas:major

    7B can be caused by the IDE/SATA/RAID controller drivers not loading or are the incorrect version. It used to happen a lot when you installed incompatible Roxio software. Now, it is more common when switching SATA modes without reinstalling Windows, driver corruption, bad registry entries, etc.

    The first thing I would do is set BIOS defaults, to make sure he didn't switch you to and fro AHCI mode. If you have this option, try both ways.

    Then I would hit F8 on boot and choose "Last Known Good Configuration."

    Have you tried Safe Mode?

    How did you go about being able to access the drives?

    Have you tried chkdsk /r on the system drive?

    The Hard Drive Controller Driver may be corrupt. Go into BIOS and change your SATA controller to IDE mode if it is shown as AHCI mode. What is the make and model of the computer?

    Sorry, missed Adrynalyne's helpful post.

    I dont think he got into the bios.
    Sata mode is already ide and has been since I built the machine.

    I have already tried loading last know good configuration and tried restoring
    to a restore point.

    Cant boot to safe mode.
    Windows does start to boot, I get the screen with the dots coming from the backgroubd to create the windows 7 logo, its just the dots hit a certain point and windows stops booting.

    I can access the drives by using the repair disk and bringing up a command window.

    chkdsk /f shows no problem, but the last message is
    Failed to transfer logged messages to the even log with status 50.

    I bult the computer, its a i7, 6gig evga x58 sli le mb.
    Its run with no problems for 2.5yrs.

    What file does it hang on when entering Safe Mode? It is very possible you have a virus, but if you cannot boot to anything you cannot really remove/fix it.

    classPNP.sys is the last file I see with safe mode + command prompt.

    Well...if it was me, I would install Windows to a new folder, and then work on scanning for viruses and malware. Obviously if it won't install to a new folder then you are looking at a hardware issue. If your 9yo didn't change BIOS settings, isn't familiar with changing driver services, and your hard drive is showing no errors, I see no additional options. You COULD try a repair install, but it is risky.

    From the repair command prompt:

    Code:
    C:
    ren Windows Windows.old
    ren '' Program Files" "Program Files.old"
    ren "Program Files (x86)" "Program Files (x86).old"
    ren Users Users.old

    Then reinstall Windows. Get Windows back up, do a complete virus and malware scan, and if thats the problem and you can clean it, you can restore that installation.

    I will likely try your suggestion.

    Since I wont be able to run my malware software (eset), what would you
    recommend to run for a malware check?

    If I wanted to try a repair install how do I go about doing that?

    Also, was going to pay $99 to microsoft for premium support, do you think thats worth a shot or are they going to just tell me to re-install?

    Microsoft support will at best send you through a repair install, and at worst format your drive and reinstall. Not worth 99 bucks imo.

    If you install to a new folder, you will be able to grab all the malware tools you need.

    As for a repair install,

    Thanks for your help
    The repair install wont work because it assumes the computer can boot.
    I tried last nite doing this by booting the install from the cd. Windows wont do it, says you need to start windows from other than the dvd.

    Unless you know a way to boot windows from a dvd or usb, then I could try the repair install.

    My apologies. I did not realize they changed this.

    Try to trick it from repair console. There are two different setup options and both work differently.

    X:\setup.exe

    X:\sources\setup.exe

    Try both. The second one has the best possibility of working.

    Want to make sure I understand.

    Boot to the install cd, go to repair computer, open cmd window
    Run
    X:\setup.exe

    X:\sources\setup.exe

    Or
    I should get to repair console by pushing f8 and repair computer.

    Then put the install cd, open cmd window, run setup.exe on cd?

    Ended up copying windows->windows.old, program->program.old....
    And re-installing.

    Then tried going back to old windows ie;
    ren windows -> windows.new.....
    ren windows.old -> windows

    And re-boot, same non reboot as before.

    Switched back to the install, and ran virus and malware check, nothing was found.
    So 9yo did something bad.

    So went back to install and rebuilt everything only took about 4hrs.
    Now have clean machine, I hope without too much effort.
    Think I should of upgraded to a ssd since I did all the work anyhow
