Why is a Windows 7 boot DVD (32-bit) not booting from it?

When the BIOS is set to boot from CD/DVD, not only will it not boot, it keeps calling for a boot diskette.

What does it take to install this software?

    Thanks,

    Kurt

Is this the same ancient Gateway PC referenced in your Windows 10 installation thread?

I suspect your Gateway originally came with Windows 98. Windows 98 era computers don't boot from CDs. Boot floppies were needed.
Is the drive in the computer able to read DVDs? Perhaps it is only a CD ROM drive.

This PC originally had Windows XP. The optical drive does read DVDs.

In fact, I started to install Windows 7 last evening, but the thing stopped with a message box saying I needed at least 512MB memory (only 192MB is currently installed).

I am going to put more memory on this and see what happens. I have no idea how much can be supported, but will find out and keep you posted.

What happens if I install more memory than the machine can handle? Will it still recognizxe up to its limit?

    Thanks,

    Kurt

It will probably throw an error instead of booting.

Make sure you put in the correct memory. voltage, timing, etc.

    Advice from me:
1.Do a new Windows bootable DVD/CD for your Windows 7 again.
2.Making a bootable Windows 7 USB,it can replace the DVD, make the computer boot from it.

It wont boot up all you will get is a black screen or a error as the motherboard wont recognise the memory installed. you can always do a google search on your motherboard specs and it will tell you the maximum memory and what type and speed.

I apologize for this taking so long.

I said on 14 August that I would keep you posted on the memory capacity of the Gateway machine.

For what it's worth it will support at most 256 MB of memory.

    The machine has been retired.

Thanks. All OSes can't be installed on every bit of hardware out there. As you discovered, 256MB won't work on Win 7. The minimum was 1 GB for a 32 bit version and 2 GB for a 64 bit version and even that is not enough; you'd get frustrated at how slow the computer was doing things.

Don't retire it, have a play with Puppy Linux -

You will be astonished by both its speed and functionality.
