Windows 7 won't install on my laptop

So I insert the disk, set the laptop to boot from dvd first, hdd second, restart, press any key for the installation to start, choose my installation settings.
After windows installs all the files, updates, etc, it must reboot, and it does.
Now when it reboots, it should bypass the "boot from dvd" thing and boot from the hard disk. I wait for an eternity, but that does not happen. Why?

Goldenskull I can't follow the rules

What kinda Disc is it a ISO from Mircosoft or did you buy this disk off a site or out of a store.

Bought it in a store. My laptop came without OS.

I don't think the problem is with the disk. Does anybody know of any bios settings that could stop the computer from trying to boot from the hard drive after it doesn't get an instruction to boot from a dvd? The bios is American Megatrends, the laptop is Asus X54HY. Thanks for helping

What do you see on screen after the reboot? Does it say "hit a key to boot from CD" then when you don't hit a key what do you see--anything?

What happens if with the first part of the install done you reboot and hit F12 to get a boot menu where you select HD as the boot device?

Finally, after changing SATA controller to IDE, it now continues the installation. It was BIOS after all. Took me 4 hours to reach this breakthrough... The install was successful. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for letting us know your resolution. I wouldn't of thought SATA drivers would be a problem for Win7. Old pre SP2 version of XP had that problem but I thought from Vista on the installer could handle SATA without any problems.

I'm glad you worked it out. :)

Thanks for caring :) I wonder if there's a trick to set the SATA mode to AHCI instead of IDE, because if I set it to AHCI in the BIOS, windows refuses to boot. IDE is not much of a problem, though. But I'd like the "advanced" technology still :)

Hmm, so that's when I should have used the driver disk? The driver disk said it was only compatible with win7, so I thought the OS must be installed before I can use it. Silly me. I may as well do another reinstall, with AHCI on, because I haven't done anything with the laptop yet, but played Minesweeper, so nothing to lose.

Thanks for the link, sach2. I've got those drivers on my cd, obviously I should have installed it during the OS installation, not after it ;)

    So, after
    1) setting up the bios
    2) installing the drivers
    3) installing the OS

what are the other important things to do? I like precision, order and max performance, I'd welcome any tips, because I just realized I know nothing about Windows 7 - I can't find too many tweaking options, unlike in Windows XP. I did read the sticky topics here ("Setting up a new computer"), but I'd like more :)

By the way, I'd like to make partitions of my 500GB hard drive, but when choosing where to install windows, instead of getting "disk 0 unallocated space, I get only "partition 1" option, so I'm not allowed to make partitions. Maybe if I'd delete "partition 1" option, "unallocated space" option would appear?

Thank you all for being so open to discussion :)

I believe the files on the CD must be in the form of INF. An exe file will not do it. I will look for your chipset and post the zip file with the required files. Unzip and copy to a USB or CD.

Edit: I do not know if you have 32bit or 64 bit. On the download page that sach2 referenced, you want the "Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver". It is a zipped file.

Edit: I can link to an exe file that will install the drivers. Then you can switch to AHCI in BIOS and see if it works. That will save you the reinstall.

Thanks, tgell. I hope you can assist.

I just want to clarify to Diemantas that you would only be loading the SATA drivers ("Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver") during install not all the other drivers such as video or network or sound. You just need to tell the Win7 install disc how to find and access the HD. Once install is complete you would then go about installing any drivers that were not automatically installed by Win7.

I can't say for sure on the delete partition option but I believe you are correct. If you delete the current partition then you should have the option of creating new ones during install.

I'm not entirely certain that a new install is necessary. You may be able to just install the "Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver" now. Did you see any yellow marks in Device Manager? Start/Orb> then type in devmgmt.msc and it enter?

Edit: Try tgell's exe to install the SATA drivers. That would be easiest. Then see if you can run ACHI mode as he suggests.
If that works then you should be able to repartition the drive from within Disk Management which again might be easier then doing the new install.

I thought this would work because it listed Mobile Express Chipset in the readme file but I guess what is needed is a SATA driver for the 6 series chipset which is kind of hard to find. I will keep looking for the exe file. There may be an sata file on your driver disk that is in exe format.

Edit: here is the chipset sofware for your chipset. Not the AHCI software.

Sorry, I could not find any Storage Driver in exe format for the 6 series. It looks like you may have to install the drivers during the Windows 7 install using a USB or CD.

I am not sure why the driver I referenced failed as it specifically stated it was for the Mobile Express Chipset SATA AHCI Controller.

    Therefore, a Windows reinstall! :cool

So, of the drivers found on
    http://support.asus.com/download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=X54HY&p=3&s=362&os=30&hashedid=07XYrF50r09kJjmN
which one's should I install during the OS installation? The chipset and the Rapid Storage Technology driver?

The solution to the problem is actually very simple. If you have Windows 7 installed, and you can only use it in IDE mode, download this microsoft fix:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922976

after you have installed it, reboot. You can enter bios right away, on the first boot. You can now pick either IDE or AHCI, and this time, it will not crash if you choose AHCI mode. I've been using it for two days now, and it works perfectly (there's no huge difference between IDE and AHCI, though).
