I just got new Dell laptop on Friday. All was going well until tonight. I had connected it to the lcd tv with hdmi cable. After I had disconnected it, I noticed after about an hour that the fan was still running. When I opened the lid there was a window saying "startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically" it also says to "remove any devices and restart" but there are no devices attached to it. When I try to restart it goes through the dell screen and says "windows is loading files" it then tries to load windows but comes up with the same startup repair message. Dell support site is pretty useless! Any ideas? i tried F8 at start up but it didnt work. I can get into the boot menu with F12 which also gets me into setup (F2) but I have no idea what to do! HELP!! Options are: hard drive, cd/dvd drive, removable devices, network, diagnostics. tried hard drive boot but it done the same thing.

This sounds like the hard drive is dead on arrival. As the laptop is new, I would return it to Dell or the place of purchase and have them swap it for another one.

This is the best option as it keeps your warranty and it is probably a dead hard drive which, whilst being easy to replace, would require install disks or a new system image that would only be available from Dell.
