I just downloaded the Windows 7 x64 beta from Microsoft (for those interested, anyone can download it from this link; it requires a Windows Live or Hotmail account which can be created for free; it's about 3.15gb in size and my download took about 75minutes but will vary depending on your connection and location). Anyway.... before I install it (probably via VM at first) I was looking for some legitimate screen shots. I have found MANY sites that say "these shots may or may not be fake; we're not sure" and I've found many sites that say "these shots ARE fake" and I've found some that look exactly like Vista. Are any of you MG members out there running Windows 7 (augie? Halo? Fred? Bill? LOL )? If so, how's about a shot or two? As a sidenote, the x64 ISO from Microsoft is called . . .
    7000.0.081212-1400_client_en-us_Ultimate-GB1CULXFRE_EN_DVD.iso
    . . . . and I was wondering if Windows 7 x64 is like Vista Ultimate x64 on steroids?

    Thanks!

I tried to add this to the above, but I waited too long....

Here's the minimum specs (according to Microsoft) for running Windows 7...
Personally, those specs seem a bit light to me, but what do I know? LOL

Click here for the FAQs for Windows 7 Beta....

Win 7 seems ok, a bit slow. I need to update the puter. This one dual boots with Vista.

Compared to Vista i find it a bit slow also but we have to remember this is not the finished product.
This is how it looks on VM.

Thanks guys! Anymore out there? How about some opinions on compatibility and performance? What are your system specs (this is mainly aimed at Fred & Bill... "a bit slow"?)

Thanks again, and I'm looking forward to more input on this. Windows 7 is "the wave of the future" and I'm seriously thinking about just skipping Vista and going straight to W7.

I'm certainly not Fred or Bill, but I installed Win 7 on my son's low-end laptop--Toshiba Satellite 300:

    Pentium Dual-Core T3400 Processor (2.16GHz, 1MB L2, 667MHz FSB)
1024MB PC6400 DDR2 800MHz SDRAM (1024MBx1)--I can't remember if I have bothered to add RAM to his, this is the spec from the mfr

I think it runs faster than on Vista (though I haven't done anything remotely resembling a scientific test). He's not a real gamer, although he probably fancies himself one. Used mostly for surfing web and IMing when he is supposed to be using Word to do his homework.

The only incompatibility I've found so far is SUPERAntispyware, but I'm sure they'll catch up eventually.

Hmm, after playing around with build 6801 pre-beta you could see and now with the beta, this is what Vista should have been. I bought Vista and now somewhat regret it as I could have easily motored along with using XP though I do like Vista. I can't comment on x64.

Screenshots I know these are legit

Win 7 just seems a bit slower, could easily be my perception. I really should do some benchmarks on it. Will try to do some testing tonight.

My Vista/Win 7 box is an Acer Aspire 5735Z laptop I caught on sale at BB. It has a dual core Intel CPU at 2.0 GHz, 2 GB RAM, onboard stock Intel video :cry.

LOL, if you have to do benchmarks to find the difference then...) I seen some people talking about folding with W7 and there was no difference. I'll have first hand experience maybe tomorrow when I go fulltime on W7. I'm already triple booting with it now.

TBH benchmarking a beta 1 build is pretty futile as the core OS is dumping data files to the logging components as data collection for bugs and issues are not removed until RTM/Escrow at least, also can be other components that could at this point affect a benchmark result that we dont know about that MSFT have installed in the kernel or core OS. Also many hardware copanies have not updated their drivers yet, while Vista ones work, they may not be best for performance, especially GFX.

Useful test if a benchmark is to be in part "validated" would be to compare Windows 7 beta 1 to XP beta 1 and Vista beta 1 and not the RTM or SP1/2/3 builds.

Even some of the tech pundits like Ed Bott are saying same not worth benchmarking yet, wait till Retail Release build.

http://blogs.zdnet.com/Bott/?p=598 (earlier 6801 build but same for any beta)

Personal observations on a dedicated PC with no other OS installs and with x64 Ultimate and a x64 compatible PC, is that it seems quicker in many areas to Vista SP1 with same apps, but slower in others, maybe the 3rd party apps need updating, however boot and shutdown is far quicker than that of XP or Vista on this PC, C2D Mobile 1.6ghz 2GB Ram and Dedicated Nvidia Go 7300. But once used to some menu changes and options, its much easier and quicker to find things, search is vastly improved, Troubleshooting apps and hardware is much better and works, quick test for you to try (note: upto you if you wish to do this as betas are for testing, done this on 4 PCs with many other various scenarios to test functionality of the Troubleshooters)

Right click the sound icon in the tray > Playback Devices > Highligh your speakers and rightclick and disable > OK

Then open Action Center and click Troubleshooting > Hardware and Sound > Playing Audio > Next and it checks issues that may affect sound and fix them in many cases, this also works for many other devices, so maybe a great tool to help users fix issues, which at present take many steps.

On the whole I like most components, some I dont but at this point I kinda like it, some who have a loathing for Vista, I guess wont like this Windows version either, especially if they have the mis-guided notion that having loads of free unused ram is good!! This build has some great bugs, one I have been testing on one PC is a PITA and no way to remove as yet the issue unless you restore or re-install, but thats the fun of testing betas ;)

Good points Halo and Ed Bott is totally correct but you know there will be people doing this.-D

LOL, ya they're coming out of the woodwork already.;) Your point about optimized drivers is spot on too. I'll be populating W7 similar to my current Vista install and check bootup/kill times but I'm not taking a stopwatch to it, well maybe 'one thousand one, one thousand two....rolleyes

Some good news today, a friend will sell me an X2/1GB rig for $200 sans the 8800GTX which he will transplant and with no drives either.:crybaby hehehe. I have an extra video card, 7600GT and drives so this will make a good test system.:) I just have to find a USB to SP/2 adaptor plug so's I can finally use my KVM switch, now which box of computer stuff is it in?:-o:-D I do believe that I had thrown it out. Aaarrghh!

Good point about it being a Beta Halo. I will certainly take that into consideration. But I like numbers. Perception can be an issue with an OS (did you see the Mojave video...). If I can say my Vista machine can run 1M on SuperPi in 31.216 seconds, and the same box can do it in 30.95 in Win7, I can have a somewhat unreliable comparison, but it is better than 'Win7 seems slow'...

It does boot nice and fast! I like that. The more I use Win7, the more I think I will buy it soon after it comes out.

LOL, I wish I had not installed W7 on a multi-boot.rolleyes I tried to access Vista's Docs&Sets from there and subsequently lost the ability to access the same from Vista. I might be able to get back in from safe mode to fix this. I'm out of multi-booting for now.:-o:-D I guess I'll wait until I get the X2 rig set up.;)

Is there a way to access the Vista partition from Win7? I can access the Win7 partition from Vista, but Win7 does not see the Vista partition. (dual boot on my laptop that came with a partitioned hard drive.)

I was able to access users in Vista but I was looking around for VMWare key and that's where it happened. Entering users did require a minute while W7 figured out how to access with the green progress bar on top, so I thought the same thing would happen with Docs&Sets.NOT!:-D

I know their will but what they dont apprieciate is that they are not testing like for like! I do feel personally that even in beta Windows 7 should be and feel much quicker than Vista or XP, it may not do for some, this could be down to drivers, hardware and software installed.. which is where mine and Ed's and others logic comes into not benchmarking or if you do dont take the results as final as you're not testing fair like for like.

Cool thing for Windows 7 and Vista is that if you know a service you have that boots at startup say a backup app or a major none needed one, then stick its startup type to Automatic (delayed), saves some multiple services all trying to start at once, thus slower boot, delay the non major ones you know... this is more aimed for those who know what services they have that run at boot for apps in the system tray for instance. (dont mess with services unless you know what you're doing)

Yes on numbers and your SuperPi is impressive and shows that something has improved in Windows 7 over Vista, do you have an XP result of that benchmark?

Yes on Mojave and was chatting with some contacts at MSFT on this a few months ago in relation to Windows 7 and perception of it in the community, as I know that Vista will hound Win7 in some circles and minds!

Thats good to know on Windows 7 and likely to buy it one it comes out Fred :) I have a feeling that the next beta drop will be a bit better as the dev teams are really onboard with this one and engaging with beta testers to get this one spot on, not going to be in some areas to somes taste but have to take rough with smooth... tech moves forward not back, and I was reading an article (lost the url for now) on how the tech press and journalists for all Windows versions have coined them "bloated" "compatability issues" etc from Windows 95 upwards ;)

Anyone try my little test on Audio?

Don't have the number for XP on this computer, it came with Vista installed. I did forget I had Avast running on the Vista OS, and not on W7. I tried Vista with Avast off and got a very similar result, so apparently it does not effect SuperPi much. I am in the process of installing Avast in Win7, and will redo SuperPi.

W O W ! ! ! It's great to see so much discussion about W7!! I'm glad I started the thread. There's soooo may good points being made here that I can;t possibly reply to them all. However..... Halo's comment about how the tech press and general public always says the new OS (or service pack for that matter) is "buggy" or "bloated" or "it sucks" or "it has lots of problems" is totally on the money. I remember when XP first came out and people saying "it just crashes all the time" and "none of my old programs work" and "it looks like a cartoon" and so on.... I still hear the same thing about Vista about how people still think that it is somehow flawed. It's different[b/] and that's it. Just like XP was different from 2000, and 2000 was different from ME, and ME was (kind of) different from 98, and 98 was different from 95. OK... ME really did suck, but other than that.....
    LOL
.... and the reference to "the Mojave video" is excellent. I have played this same video for customers who have been convinced by the PC 'expert' neighbor and the 'geek' cousin that Vista was developed by the Dark Lord and is inherently evil and likely to ruin your life, and it gives them something to think about.....

Anyway..... I'm really stoked that this topic has taken off like it has... thanks for all the comments and EXCELLENT discussion. A lot of good talk going on here :-D

Interesting link about MSFT to offer XP to Windows 7 upgrades.
Excerpt below but read the entire article. Interesting.

Wondering if that would be possible for OEM users?
