    Hi Earl

It is a free download in its beta or release candidate stage as its in testing, All Windows version are retail software so will when finally released as this one will be in October 2009, paid for software, the trial versions do have long expiry date, but these versions are test version only.

Sadly who ever told you it was a free upgrade for Vista users was massively wrong!

Information and pricing on Windows 7 is patchy at present (more like wild guesses by some tech news websites trying to gain hits) as its not been released information and upgrade for free from Vista bought PCs are likely to only be to PCs bought a few months before Win7 release, if the same upgrae model from XP to Vista is to be taken into concideration.

Windows 7 is still in test stage at present and I would urge caution in installing if you are not used to beta and test software as while its a stable release in the RC version it may not work correct for everyone and all depends on if you have the right spec of PC hardware, if you can run Vista now then likelyhood id your PC can run Windows 7.

    earlwhite,

Thank you for your question regarding the release of Windows 7. I can definitely understand your concern with downloading a new operating system, especially when you hear it will have an expiration date. It looks like you’ve been pretty well informed as to the status of Windows 7, however I would like to point you in the right direction for any future questions you might have about it. The best site for all the up to date news on the product is found at the Windows 7 support forum, at micorsoft.com/springboard. The site will also give you all sorts of useful information, such as the “what’s new in the RC” feed….or you can also you use talkingaboutwindows.com as an additional resource
    Thanks,
    Glen
