i recently purchased a computer with windows 7. i want to know if comodo anti-virus and firewall is better than windows defender and windows firewall. also is ok to use selective startup in system configuration utility as a application startup manager, or is that only for troubleshooting purposes? any info you can give me would be helpful.

I use Free Comodo Firewall + Defense+Sandboxie. My AV is Microsoft Security Essential. IMO I like what I am using so far.

Just remember there is NO perfect AV and No perfect Firewall and NO perfect answer to your question. YOU are the one sitting at the computer so enjoy it and be careful.:major

On my Win 7, I use windows firewall (but I also have a router & modem hardware firewall as well) and I prefer a different antivirus than windows defender. I use Avira Anti-vir. I've used Anti-Vir on every computer I've had and on 3 different OS's and I've always been satisfied. Here are a few tips from our very own chaslang on how to keep your pc safe.

No, it is not a good idea to use MSConfig to control start-ups. It is usually only for troubleshooting purposes. If interested, look through the programs here that can manage your start-ups for you . Here is another good thread by chaslang on why not to use MSConfig for startups. I hope this information helps you. :)

thank you for your help. i removed comodo and installed avira anti-vir and enabled windows firewall. i also set system configuration utility to normal startup. however i downloaded Start Right, but when i try to install it it says i don't have administrative permissions. but i am logged on as administrator. so i downloaded Startup List which appeared to be majorgeeks pick, but i can't figure out how to use it. could you recommend an easy to use startup manager.

    Hi

You'll get loads of various answers to best Antivirus and Firewall and in the end its best to try some out and see what one you like and like the GUI of, if behind a router then the Windows Firewall in Win7 is good (doesnt by default have outbound filtering enabled as you would have in Comodo, but then you will be surfing safe as to not get mawlare in the first place wont you ;)) but you can easily filter apps in the Windows Firewall by using this guide I like HERE.

As for Windows Defender its more malware geared so you will need an Antivirus application.

    My used ones are....

Main Desktop: AVAST free, Windows Firewall, Window Defender, Spywareblaster and Malwarebytes and Superantispyware free versions for on demand scanning.

Laptops: Have Micrososft Security Essentials on them, with Spywareblaster, Windows Defender and Windows Firewall, again with free on demand scanners of Malwarebytes and Superantispyware

Netbook: AVAST Free, Windows Firewall and Defender, Spywareblaster and Malwarebytes free

If you want a standalone firewall then PCTools free firewall is good, couple that with Microsoft Security Essentials or Avast or AVG (not all only one) and Spywareblaster with Malwarebytes and/or Superantispyware free versions and you should be covered, plus keeping all your apps and Windows upto date as well as the main security advice of safe surfing and knowing what you are downloading and from where.

For Startup managment, my thoughts are why manage if you dont want them delete them and CCleaner allows this from its Tools > Startup menu, but if you wish to manage then dont use msconfig, but use the standalone version of StartupCPL (works in Windows 7) or Autoruns but I would tend to use StartupCPL if anyone asks me to just disable over delete a startup.

i didn't know you could use windows defender with a real time anti-virus as well. thought it would slow down my computer. so i will enable windows defender and use avira anti-virus as well. but when you say, delete those startup programs that i don't want running all the time, I think i wiil use the startup manager in ccleaner since i may not want the program to run every time i start my computer but may want to run them sometime.

It seems windows 7 wants me to use selective startup as a startup manager all the time, not just for troubleshooting.

when i started up my computer, i got a message stating that too many programs that load at startup can slow down startup. it gave me an option to use selective startup to disable some of these programs on startup. I also removed avira anti-virus and downloaded AVG. so i'm using avg now, but in action center under security, it says that having windows defender and AVG both set to on slows down my computer. so i had to turn off windows defender.
