Hi oldandconfusedagain. If using Win 8.1 Metro seems too confusing you can download StartMenu8 here on Major Geeks. Then you can open your Desktop and things will look and work like Win7 or XP. Using the Start Menu you will see all your programs listed.

Hope this helps. I know some people find it useful for using programs like Office or other programs that do not require the Internet. At least while they are getting use to Win 8 Metro.

If you decide to install StartMenu8 I would do a Custom install and uncheck the extra things it offers to install you don't need those.

Hope it helps you. Actually some users will only use their Win8 with the StartMenu and never use the Win 8 Metro. Others have a love/hate experience with Win8, but some love it after getting use to it. To each their own!;)

Pinning the Microsoft Office program icons to the taskbar will probably be very helpful to you. This technique eliminates the need to find the programs in the Win 8.1 All Apps screen and allows you to start Word, Excel, etc. by simply clicking on an icon on the taskbar (on the Desktop screen). This tutorial should help you with the Pin to Taskbar technique: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rl7f8f3WvgM

figuring things out as we go along

get to the same conclusion as I could with
    previous systems,,,, but that's progress
    handicapped here and could care
    less about touchscreen, but adjusting
