anyone have any fixes (non registry hopefully) related to windows update error 8024402c? windows troubleshooter cannot fix the issue with elevated privledges, restore didn't work, or chkdsk (which has in the past). I also waited 15 minutes as suggested by windows troubleshooter.

Here is what Microsoft says about Windows Update error 8024402C

Quote "If you receive Windows Update error 8024402C while checking for updates, you might need to do one of the following:

•This error might be caused by a program running on your computer that's preventing Windows Update Services (SVCHOST) from accessing the Internet. Programs that might do this include firewalls, antispyware software, web accelerators, Internet security or antivirus programs. and proxy servers.

If you have any of these programs running, you might need to turn them off while downloading and installing updates. We recommend that you turn them back on after updating your computer.

Disclaimer: If you have to temporarily disable security software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks." Unquote

well I got downloads to work by allowing all those ipv6 services and firewall rules. it's never done that when I disabled them before. it worked with a strange result though, first it said there was x number updates, then y. anyway.... I guess it's functioning. thanks.

When you look at Windows Updates View Update History does it now show any Failed updates?

no it only shows one windows defender update successful, and no other listing. could that have been cleared by running like crap cleaner though?

Just to check go to Windows Updates in Control Panel and Check For Updates to see if it shows any you need to install.

When you say "crap cleaner" can you be more specific? Is that the only program you have used to clean you computer and what features of the cleaner you used? For instance did you clean the Registry?

    Hi

Are you still on Windows 8 or 8.1?

CCleaner will likely not cause this is not an area it deals with, but if you have failed updates then look in Update History and list the updates that have failed? But likely the update history list may have been cleared by using the Windows Update Fixes as they will zero the list.

What I would try is to manually download and install one of the failed updates as sometimes some can get stuck and cause others to fail, to get the manual file, just search for the KB0000000 number, if you get a failed set in the future.

Thanks for the replies, at present the issue seems to have resolved itself. If it arises now I have some answers to work with, thanks. I don't really want to rollback even to see what the issue was, I'm happy to have a functioning computer but if it happens again hopefully I can solve the mystery of the defiant update.

    Hi

Great that all is ok now and you have ideas to work with if the same issue arises in the future, we hope not but you never know.
