Sounds to me like someone is updating their drivers with windows update.

Right click the start button in the lower left corner. On the popup menu select control panel. When it shows - up in the top right side select - view by "large icons". Windows update should be the last thing in the list. Select it. Now on the left side you can choose the settings you like.

I am not suggesting you turn off Windows Update. You asked how to turn off Windows Update.

Open Control Panel, click Windows Update, click the arrrow head next to 'Install updates automatically (recommended)', and change it to 'Check for updates but let met choose whether to download and install them'.

Go back to where you selected manual and uncheck "give me recommended updates the same way..... ". This could stop unwanted driver updates from auto installing. If it doesn't help you can always set it back again.

Windows Update does not override settings.

I still think you are upgrading drivers through it (which it also doesn't do by default, you would have had to set it that way).

In fact, you gave a telltale sign: The green you see is your video driver not having the codec support needed for the video (audio is a different device). This is VERY common with Windows Update drivers. I have fixed this for several clients so far, all of them using Facebook and having that problem. It also explains why Shockwave would blow up.

If you continue to have problems and are more familiar with Windows 7 consider installing that OS. I have changed many users over to 7 from 8 just to save them the time it takes to learn a different OS.
That being said, 8 does work and works well. Adry will get you through this if you do all he says. You might post your full system specs to aid troubleshooting.
