A friend of mine has a Windows 98SE machine that gives him error messages when he boots. I haven't seen the messages so I'm sorry for not being able to be more specific, but I think this kind of message in 98 is common. During the boot up process, the screen goes to text interface and says that a file referenced in System.ini or the registry cannot be found. It's pointing to a VxD file. He says that it's in his McAfee folder. He went ahead and deleted McAfee but this message keeps popping up. Is there a way that I could perhaps find this reference in System.ini or the registry and just delete it? Is there a utility that is good for this type of thing so that I won't have to spend hours in front of his damn computer? Thanks for your help.

Try a registry cleaner to see if that works. You may also want to run msconfig and remove any startup entries that still may be showing that are related to McAfee.

Find out what the exact .vxd is, then do a search in the registry and the system.ini.
