    Hi again all.....
I have an old IBM Pentium II computer which, after a Millenium Edition meltdown, was reformatted and now runs on 98.
It has the following fatal exception errors......anyone know anything about any of them, and how to get rid of them??

    OE at 016F:BFF9DFFF
    OE at 0028:COOC3B85
    OE at 0028:834B2B45

Ok, tried that and unfortunately the computer will not allow it to run.
Tried 4 times, and it came up with the following 4 exceptions.......
    OE at 0028:839C7B2F
    OE at 0028:83776B35
    OE at 0028:F4A2203E

actually, OE errors referencing memory are typically video related. Have you tried safe mode yet and then the SFC?

I have the scan running now.....and it is recognising files that have been changed - what am I supposed to do with them, what option do I choose?

    So far I have grpconv.exe, and extrac32.exe.

lets step back a bit so we can understand what is going on with the SFC. The sfc scans for system files that have changed. When you update windows via windows update (installing patches etc), system files are changed. The SFC compares the source cd with the current file version and notes a change... so now we are in a situation where if you choose to replace all the files that it comes up with, you will have to update windows again with all the patches from windows update. If you are comfortable with this and have no issue with replacing files to test and make sure that the issue has been resolved, then proceed with replacing the files, otherwise cancel the operation.

Dang, Kodo. That's an explanation I'd expect to come from me. :) Nice.

additionally, make sure you have drivers for win98 as some ME drivers are not compatible with 98.

Is 98 different than 2k and XP in this area?

2K/XP are smart enough not to replace updated files :)

I think that was a feature given to 2k and XP but not 98. And I thought it was only SP3 + for 2k that did this.. ?

Well, my knowledge of XP is much better than 2K, but I think the only SFC fix that sounds like what you mentioned above for 2K was in good ol' SP1.

I remember getting WFP replacing original versions when installing Windows Updates before 2K SP1 was released.

I'd totally forgotten about that until you mentioned it.

I was under the impression that sfc -- at least for 2k/XP -- would use the %systemroot%\ServicePackFiles\ directory during scans in addition to the CD. My 2k installs are usually slipstreamed now, so I don't even have that directory.

You mean ME files can still be left over even after the HD was formatted??

on a quick format, yes. The files are still there but there is no index of them so they essentially don't exist to any new OS. On an unconditional format, they are gone and only exist in EM Residue. Neither should interfere with the installation of a new operating system. I'm more concerned about having installed drivers specifically for 98 and not ME.
