Hail, how are you gentlemen ?

Windows 98 se, english, with no aditional windows components installed (not even 1), up to date (all windows updates)

1: Does anyone know if i can remove windows media player from my computer ? im not ussing any updated version, im using the version that comes with windows 98, for what i know, i can only see 3 files in \program files\windows media player\ and a shortcut in the start menu

2: What about this files in c:\ can i remove them ? will everything still work ?

    2.1- Autoexec.bat
    2.2- Command.com
    2.3- Config.sys
    2.4- Io.sys
    2.5- Msdos.---
    2.6- msdos.sys
    2.7- Suhdlog.dat
    2.8- System.1st

3: The first that i was going to do was to edit the startup (applications) options with system mechanic startup manager, like in windows xp i had everything that starts in hkey_local_machine\...\...windows\currentversion\run but what did i found ? things in config.sys, autoexec.bat... ermmm, wtf, is this needed ? hoo ;(

    1. It is safe to remove media player.

    2. The only files that you can remove are config.sys and autoexec.bat. You need the rest of them. I would not delete any hidden files in the root directory.

    3. A good rule of thumb: If you don't know what it does, don't delete it.

Another: If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

The only problem is that is isnt more stable

    Thanks ;)

Out with windows media player, hope im not going to get any problem... i had to remove the files and it said that "things are bla bla bla with this folder, if you remove it, you may get problems" (something like that) lets see...

Hmm i can remove config.sys and autoexec.bat ? i was thinking all but those 2 hehe... will dos games and other things (that i run after "restart in ms-dos mode" work if i remove them ?

    Some other questions :p

4: Is there anyway to remove the "find" in startmenu without disable the find command in the folders when i right click ?

5: What about the "help" in startmenu ? and any way to disable the f1 shortcut that opens the windows help ?

6: Anyway to remove "control panel" and "printers" from my computer ?

(i have tried x-setup for question 4, 5 and 6, didnt find anything)

7: lame question... how to get sound ussing a soundblaster live value sound card in ms-dos

8: With windows 98, i need one of those utilities that clear memory, etc... wich is the best ?

    Thanks :) ;)

You don't need to remove config.sys and autoexec.bat, just don't use them. They're needed only if you run DOS programs anyway.

Run msconfig. On the General tab choose Selective Startup and uncheck the first three items (Process config.sys, autoexec.bat, winstart.bat).

some programs do rely on the %path% variable thats set in autoexec.bat, its not a good idea to delete it, but if you're sure..............

Windows 9x sets up the %PATH% enviroment variable for you, actual the bad thing is if people tries to set the %PATH% in Autoexec.bat and overwrites the %PATH% set by Windows :)

You can move some of the things in AUTOEXEC.BAT to the file C:\WINDOWS\DOSSTART.BAT but if you want CD-ROM access in DOS then you still need the CONFIG.SYS to load those.(Unless you can get Dynaload to work)

It is not generally recommended to have DOS related stuff loaded when using Windows, so maybe you should consider having Multiple Configurations in your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT (One fo Windows 98 and one for pure DOS)

You can also try Tweak UI 1.33 and see if it can be used to configue this in Win98 (Tweak UI 1.33 in WIn2k can at the IE-tab)
Maybe you could try the Policy Editor included on your Win98 CD-ROM and poke around in that :

By downloading the Creative SB Live! drivers for WIn9x then it should install a SB Emulator both in DOS and Windows.
Never used such utility as Windows 98 always crashed before I had the time to use it. Then I started using WIn2k/XP which doesn't need such tools.
