I am helping a friend out who wants/NEEDS to buy a copy of Windows 98 or ME. He bought a used computer and ended up havign to wipe everythign off the hard drive, and apparently did not stop to think that the person he bought form did not give him any disks (duh). ANyways, I am wondering if anyone can recommend a reputable place to buy either of these, you know - somewhere he won't get ripped off by getting cds but a registered or unusable serial (I understand these things are prone to happen). Where can you get either of these now, or are they even being sold (legally!)?

    THanks for your help.

Pricewatch.com would be a good place to look. I would advise against ME and go with 98SE.

Thank you for your input here. I will be heading that way very shortly. If you don;t mind, can you explain why 98SE and not ME? Just to I can know and let him know? Thank again!

IMO Windows ME is just way too buggy. I have found that 98SE is by far the more stable of the two.

You can get it a lot cheaper than that. I have seen it for as little as $17.

Yeah I hear ya, cheaper is good. lol But The $17 that is listed at pricewatch is from the same company and is stated to actually be 95 not 98SE. Do you think he would be safe buying somewhere else or something else. The cheapest this particular place has the full 98SE for is the following listing:

Microsoft Windows 98 SE (Second Edition) Operating System - Full Version (Retail CD & Keycode)

    List Price $74.30

    Your Price $52.48

Notice the other listing said "unopened". So does that mean someone else has used this set? I guess I am confused and I dont want to be a bother. I have never bought an OS that didnt come with the computer - lol. Thank you again so much for your help, as it is my butt on the line here if hte guy gets ripped off - lol. TY!

$50 isn't a bad price. You can also check out ebay or inquiry in MGs very own Buy, Sell & Trade Forum.

Thanks, I didnt even realize that forum existed. Where have I been, huh?

You know, my main concern here is not getting ripped off. How common is that when it comes to buying software, do you know? Should I just do best I can to read reviews of seller and pray - hard?

Whenever you are buying anything over the internet you are assuming a certain amount of risk. I would read the reviews provided.
