    Hello,

I have a desktop pc running windows 98. When I open Explorer I get numerous different runtime errors. Eventually IE closes down. I have tried to run a number of programmes to fix the errors, but none seem to be compatable with Windows 98.

    Any ideas

I remember Windows 9x doing regular repair installs, about 2 times a year. Maybe you should do the same. (Using the batch98 tool before doing so will help you to establish all settings as they were.)

Thanks for that. But I decided to install Windows XP. I now have a problem that the PC does not turn off automatically. Any ideas?

    Greetings, rosway.

    Agreed with tgell.

Quick questions: did you format/install XP, or did you layer it on top of 98?
And, "PC does not turn off automatically" - do you go through the Start > Shut down routine, or do you mean Hibernation or Sleep modes?

If this turns out to be a complex problem, you might also consider creating a new thread, as your OS and symptoms are completely different from the original thread.

Thanks for the response.....I Low Level formatted the hard drive prior to installing Windows XP. When I go to "Start-turn off computer-shut down" I get it is now safe to power off. It does not do it automatically, as it did with W98.

Infact, there is a sleep/hibernate option along with shut down and restart options but it cannot be selected.

Did you read through the links posted by tgell? Very good information there.

Looks like the main thrusts of those articles are hardware and software compatibilities and driver issues - you might browse your OEM site for any driver updates, especially since you've upgraded a 98 machine to XP.
