i am running windows 98.however,i have a windows 98 se cd.when i stick it in,it asks if i want to upgrade to windows 98 se.im tempted!whhat i was wondering was if i tried to upgrade with the disk and if something went wrong or if i messed up somehow doing it(parish the thought!)would the windows 98 i already have(which isnt se)been messed up too?also,my floppy drive doesnt work, can you re-install windows without using a floppy disk?also, since my floppy drive doesnt work,i cant back up any of my files.i would like to upgrade, but as i said i dont want to lose the windows i have now if something goes wrong updating to windows 98 se.could anyone tell me the answer to this, thanks alot

If you have the disc and it is legitimate it should not mess up your system and you would see a world of difference since Windows 98 original was an incomplete OS. Why else would there be a need for a Second Addition? You will be required to enter a new key code during the upgrade so you will have to have that. Is it the upgrde disc only or is it the full OS? If it is the full OS borrow floppy from someone and back up what you can and go for a fresh install, that is always better. Or better even do you have a friend with a CD-R/RW that would be kind enough to let you borrow it to back-up to CDR/RW media? If I were where you are I would.

If not just go ahead with the upgrade, it won't hurt anything.

    windows 98 upgrade

thanks for your reply.yes,my 98 se disk is full os.however,my floppy drive is broke.do you have to have a floppy drive to install windows?plus, with no floppy drive,i cant back up my data, and im not sure what a fresh install means or a regisration code is.my main is losing my data and screwing up my windows 98 i have now if the 98 se upgrade gets messed up(by my total incompatance!)and i have no driver disks.i want to upgrade, but as i said i dont want to lose my data or the windows i have now.one more thing,i only have 1.16 gb free space,is that enough free space to do this?please reply, and thanks very much, and excuse my ignorance

Without the registration code you won't be able to install. You will have the option to back up your existing Win98 when / if you upgrade but with only 1.16 gb free space I doubt you will be able too. Even if you do manage to upgrade you won't have any space left to speak of.
