Windows 98 to Xp?

I currently have Windows 98, and I want to have Xp. Can I just buy the Xp disc, and install it, and then i will have windows Xp? Because a friend told me that I need to buy a whole new system to have Windows Xp. Is this true? Please help.

You can buy upgrade discs for xp--As far as min requirments for xp to run--

These requirments are really minimal--(may not work to its full potential)

For whatever its worth, I have heard very inconsistent reviews about doing an upgrade installation. If I had to do it myself today, I would do a complete installation.
