Windows 98 unofficial service pack

alright, i installed the service pack on my windows 98 machine and now it is stuck in an endless loop because it keeps giving me registry corrupted errors. So everytime I start it up it says it is trying to repair the registry and then it repairs it and i hit enter and the same thing happens again. Any clues on what to do?? thanks

See if you can boot to "Safe Mode Command Prompt" (tap F8 while booting) and run scanreg /restore

This should give you a list to choose from to restore your registry from a backup version.

 

alright, ill try that, is there anyway to get the service pack either working or uninstalled?

 

I don't know anything about that service pack, but once you can get Windows to boot I'd look for it in Control Panel > Add/Remove.

 

i got it to boot and its not anywhere in the add remove items , bahhh

 

Well it's good that you can boot now. According to this http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html you can uninstall from Add/Remove. Maybe it didn't actually install properly.

 

after i restarted it, it resorted back to the loop, the only real way to get it to start is to get to the menu to select which mode i want to go into, choose step by step confirmation and hit n when it asks me if i want to boot using the registry.

 

Hmmmm, OK...

Go back to the scanreg /restore thing in safe mode command prompt, and in the list that comes up, try working your way back in time from the most recent registry backup to the oldest, and repeat until (hopefully) you can boot normally.

 

If you can't find a good backup in the scanreg list, then run

scanreg /fix
followed by
scanreg /opt

This will attempt to repair and optimize the current registry.

 

It should be in the Add/Remove
scroll down to where it says Windows Service Pack (Unofficial)

 

all that is under w in the add removie is Winamp, Windows 98 Q823559 Update, and windows media player 7.1

 

Are you going to Start/Settings/Control Panel/Add/Remove?, because you should have more listings than what you have typed.

 

yeah i am going to add/remove, those are just the things under the letter W, when i ran scanreg /fix this is the message i got at 92% done "Windows found an error in your system files, try deleted some files or installing windows to another location"

 

When you installed the program did you download using zip file or auto install.
If using the zip try installing again.

 

i used the auto install, i don't understand why there has to be a problem with mine but everyone elses went off without a hitch

 

The word "Unofficial" scared me into not installing it. I be doing fine as is for now, my only next step is XP...

 

One reason not to auto install is you have no controll if something screws up.
Did you backup your registry before installing.

Remember to backup first
Don't ever remove a program through Add/Remove, if the program has its own uninstaller.

 

How much space do you have on your C: drive, and have you run SCANDISK on your C: drive?
