windows 98 updater

I have windows 98se. I have recently tried to use it to check for updates.
but when i go into the scan system it does nothing..I have dsl..
can you help?

 

I think microsoft stop support for windows 98SE in june 2005.

From the MS site: "Critical and security updates only after August 2002; no updates will be offered after June 2006".

 

But, windows update (V4?) should still be up and running.

The unofficial service pack for win98SE does install all the needed updates (so does the unofficial service pack for IE (98SE))....

 

OK, here we are at June 30, 2006. Win98 support is supposed to disappear forever. Is there any way to get all the upgrades they offer from a second source? The above mention link is a bit dated, but I might find myself using it after MS drops the ball.

 

Microsoft drops the ball?? windows 98 is how many years old now, and you expect them to still write patchs for it. Im sorry, everyone hates microsoft but its still stupid to expect them to write patches for a os thats pretty old.

 

Simple math, 8 years. Leaving the website up would be nice, not everyone has the latest and greatest OS or hardware, nor feels the need to. Eight years isn't that long. My library of old programs have a value that is not easily dismissed, at least by me.

You have to remember MicroSoft guards their code jealously, so no one else is going to.

Truth is, I lived without the patches for many years, I expect I can do without if they took the website down tomorrow. One thing I've already noticed, a lot of the viruses have also walked away. Win98 just isn't as attractive as it used to be, but if it is connected to a high speed connection it can still be a menace.
