You might be able to install on top of Windows 95 (Though it might create new problems):

    1. Create a bootdisk (Or check that you are able to boot from the Windows 98 CD-ROM)
    2. Verify that you have access to the CD-ROM drive when using the bootdisk
    3. Start the install with this command (Where X is the cd-rom drive letter)
Before doing this stunt, then I recommend to backup all personal documents (Along with emails, pictures, music).

I would probably make a clean install ( format c: ) instead of trying to upgrade the existing Windows 95 install.

    snakefoot,

This started in Hardware http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=43920 he was not sure if the 98 disk was an upgrade or full version.

Good advice, doing a clean install, you can start fresh. Let us know if you need help or step by step instructions following snakefoot's advice on the format.

Sorry about the vagueness in my info here.....bit clueless at this sort of thing. I have in my posession....1 x oldish computer system which is working fine at the mo on windows 95.....1 x windows 98 2nd edition cd rom with registration key number.....and 1 x windows98 2nd edition boot disk (floppy).

Now where do i go lol?

I'd rather just do a clean install as you put it.....just replace the 95 with 98......at least i guess this is the best thing to do? I just want a reasonable system for my lil girls to use for practising their computer stuff on.....they are only 5 and 6 so they are only doing real basic stuff at the mo...using Word and stuff like that to write things on.

Most guides assumes you have a working bootdisk, but just to make sure do the following:
    1. Insert the Win98 bootdisk in the computer
    2. Boot computer and see that it loads from the Win98 bootdisk (Select that you want CD-ROM support)
    3. Insert the Win98 install-CD in the CD-ROM drive
    4. Change drive-letter to the CD-ROM drive and check that you see the files on the Install-CD using dir.

If the above steps doesn't present any problems then you should be able to use this guide (Notice the link in the article about Format):

    http://www.cybertechhelp.com/html/tutorials/tutorial.php/id/39

Note if the HDD is larger than 512 MByte then I would probably not just Format, but Partition it as FAT32 after having Removed the existing FAT16 partition, as FAT32 is a little safer.

P.S. Another guide I stumbled upong.

Though if all this still make your head spin, then I would probably invite a friend over and let him do the install for ya.

    Hi,

I upgraded my old Win 95 to Win 98 and went throught the same problems as you are experiencing. It is better to do a clean install.

Format your hard drive using FDisk on your Boot disk and then with the Win 98 CD in the drive it should self run. If not change to the CD drive and type SETUP/S

This should load all the drivers and install the OS.

You will need the floppy for the VGA of the monitor which you can use after the installation. During the setup you will be prompted to make a boot disk which you should do.

    Good luck
