I'm running Windows 98 and have been given what I thought was an upgrade to 98 SE. However, the disc just says Windows 98 upgrade. I did run it to the point where it scanned my system and was ready to install. I'm a little leary to do so. Can anyone tell me what this disc is?

Sounds like you have the "Windows 98 Upgrade" edition which upgrades Windows 3.x/95 to Windows 98. You can go to this webpage and look at what the Windows 98 Second Edition Update "BOX" looks like.

    Good Luck!

Thanks for your help. I'll think I'll pass on this upgrade. I'm really waiting for Vista to emerge and then I'll buy a complete new system. But I'll tell you, this '98 system runs like a champ for me. I have BellSouth DSL and I really can't imagine it running much quicker. Thanks again.

You are certainly not alone. Many people [probably millions] still run Windows ’98 and swear by it as well.

The biggest improvement which that I noticed [after I first installed Win XP] was that it rarely has the ‘blue-screen’ crash events which were always so common in Win 98/SE/ME and eventually caused many users to have to constantly reinstall their operating systems over-and-over again.

Unfortunately, as of July 11, 2006 the Windows 98/SE/ME OS is no longer being ‘updated’ by Microsoft at all - for technical support, including security updates, and other improvements, etc. This is not really 'big news' as most of the recent security updates have been more geared toward Win XP and they have been slowly weaning off major updates for Win 98 for a few years now. Therefore, I do not consider it a very safe operating system to run.

Incidentally, since you are running Windows ’98 and are using DSL; there is an older PC World article called Unsafe at High Speed: Security on Your Broadband Connection which gives a few specific tips on how you can prevent malicious hack attacks by taking a few simple steps [for those who are running Win98/95].

Although this article is a bit old [from Jan. 2000] the information it contains is still relevant and the tips are specifically geared toward those who are running Win98/95 and are using DSL. ;)

    Good Luck!
