windows 98 was crapping out...ran 2000 paralel(sp)...oops

well my friend was having windows 98 issues..missing files and tons of error messages..installed windows 2000 and then stuff went from bad to worse.when online...internet explorer will load pages then just close out...2 different messages show up...a memory error or it just says Iexplorer error.Iexplorer must shut down. click ok to close. also his color is messed up it its only 16 bit color and he can only have 800 x 600 pixels...so is it possible to get rid of windows 2000 with destroying the computer...oh a way to just fix everything at once...really need help..im good with computers but for some reason cant fix this at all...oh and another thing there is no windows restore..thats wut i was always used to so im stuck now...HELP PLEASE!!!!

Welcome to MG's .... we feel your pain. If you were having issues with 98, and got worse with 2000 (which by the way has less installed drivers and can be a pain to configure), I'd say you are looking at either ram, power supply or ....cross your fingers, a dying mobo ....
But questions first. Can you put the hard drive into another 'puter and check that it is OK? ....get your important stuff off of it at that time.
If it's ok .... you might want to reinstall 98 on that hard drive, make sure its running right, put it back into the faulty 'puter and start swapping out the ram (report what the computer says it has for ram mb's).
Try one stick at a time.
Then or first, get into the bios and report back on the temps and voltages.
And if still iffy, swap out comparable power supply .... if its running for a while, you could try downloading everest
