Windows 98

I just bought an old laptop with Windows 98 from a buddy. I reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled the O.S. The Win 98 setup is asking me for my Product Key. The laptop doesn’t have a sticker with the Product Key, and my buddy can’t find his Certificate of Authenticity. I know I should have thought of this before I reformatted and reinstalled the O.S., but I just didn’t. I guess it is a lesson learned.
Anyways here is my question: Is there a way for me to retrieve the Product Key from the C.D.?

I found some on Google, but did not know that just any key would work for me.

For the most part yes, and its even less of an issue because win98 is no longer supported by microsoft.

 

Although it is no longer supported, can I still download all the old updates?

 

Not postive, but i believe so. If not from microsoft, i know somebody has bundled them. Google win98 offline update or some thing.

Last time I checked (about 3 months ago), Live Update was still working for Win98SE (maybe 98 as well) . . . all the previous security and program updates were still there and downloadable via the Windows Update link under Tools.
