windows 98se graphics problem

Hi , just joined so firstly forgive any mistakes, My problem is this, i have managed to rebuild an old pc to surf with as my main pc an xp had major headaches with updates and external hardrives crashing my pc , in the end i got this neat little 2gb 500mg hz intel pc I put in a soundcard and a 40gb hardrive no probs and installed 98se . I then found i had yuk colours on my monitor , i couldnt change the monitor settings from 16 to 256 the slider wouldnt operate, i did research and realised that i hadnt thought that i wouldnt have the necessary drivers for the motherboards onboard graphics card! with no cd or means to find out what they are i looked inside no joy , tried a proggy to find out what was inside the main guts it listed all sorts belarc i think it was but no help there either , the pc is called a videoseven some unknown brandname. I installed xp and great full colours! but then i was faced with the same prob that originally caused me tobuild a second pc in the first place my external usb drives locked up if i applied xp patches from august 2005 onward as this was happening on two machines i figured a problem with freecom and ms so i wnt back to 98se and decided to join your forums in the hopes that someone may help me, im not too techical only learnt a bit, ie installs of os and dual booting but im lost any ideas as to how to get the graphics sorted,

 

Well you definitely need to load the display adapter drivers for your graphics card. If you used Belarc it should tell you what you have under "display". Then you will know what drivers to look for.

 

Try Everest, and Fresh Diagnose as well. Between them, you should find out your specs. Is there a brand name on the mobo? Was the computer itself brand name at some point?

As for XP locking up your USB drives, what brand are the drives?
