Microsoft has a download for the AIK (Automated Installation Kit) which is more or less a builder for a Vista PE disc. The odd thing is, is that it's been released as a .IMG file. MS has released .ISO's before, but a .IMG file? Isn't that a MagicISO format file? Does this hint that MS and MagicISO are in cahoots? Anyway- I don't feel like buying MagicISO. So, before I download the AIK (it's 992mb!), I'd like to know what the heck am I supposed to do with an .IMG file? I did some research and it seems that Nero won't burn it. Some people changed the extension .ISO and it worked OK. Others tried Daemon Tools with some success, others got malware from Daemon Tools. I never really found a need for Daemon Tools, I just burn the images I've come across. So, any input here is appreciated. If you're interested, here's some links:

    Easy peasy, amigo.

Any image-handling program worth its chops will work with an .IMG file. In terms of usage, it's really not that different from an .ISO.

I know that IMGBurn will handle it (as well as other image formats, .ISO, .NRG), and it's free.

As for Daemon Tools, it's fine, but I've since found out that Alcohol 52% will emulate even MORE drives, as well as providing a solid disc imaging engine.

People may think of Daemon tools as malware since it uses rootkit-like technology, but the same is true of Alcohol. It's really not as bad as it may seem.

I use rawwrite to deal with .IMG files; so far all I've had to do are >IMG files for floppies

I'm curious, how large was the .IMG file? oops, just re-read and saw it is 992meg  don't think it is floppy nor CD material! If it was bigger than a floppy, I'd probably open ImgBurn and see what happened.

Yeah plodr, I've used Rawrite for floppy images also (with great success I might add). I had forgotten until you mentioned it; I don't work with floppies too much anymore, let alone floppy images. ;) Anyway, I'm huge fan of ImgBurn and it makes sense that it can handle .img files; it's part of the freekin' name for cryin' out loud!!!! Thanks guys. I heard a loud >POP< when I pulled my head out of my _ss  Thanks again

Hey dlb, it's just an attempt to confuse the masses. Most people have heard of ISOs so shake it up a bit and use a different extension! :D
