windows automatic updates problem

I have a desktop running XP home with SP2.
I hav'nt seen windows update itself in a long time so I tried to turn on the windows automatic updates and the radio button will turn on but it will not change the icon to automatic. Firewall (windows) is on and so it AVG free edition, Adaware plus and spybot S&D.

If I try to update manually from the microsoft site, I get the following error which there is nothing in their search or help section for: Error number: 0x80070424.

I did go through the malware and spyware removal sequence and found a few things that were fixed and I fixed the purityscan problem too. I just can not get this machine to update windows.

Any and all help is appreciated.

OK, I just tried doing that and after downloading, ran it and it said that the service pack I'm using is newer and no need to install that download.

Any other suggestions?

@TimW - The post I made and the last post you made were the same solution, so I would assume it was the steps in those posts that solved the OP's problem.
