Windows Build Change...?

    Gonna be short sweet and 2 the point here:
    Anything in the registry or somewhere else where i can change the reported build number of windows that applications get? I am referring to xp by the way. My friend brought the subject up with me, mostly because he wanted to upgrade xp to longhorn 4008 and it told him he had to have build 4000 or higher. Not just for longhorn but the build in general...is it infact changable? Thanks....
