I found another thread about the same problem that I am having. But, I believe this one is a windows error and not a virus.

I am running Windows XP Pro, occassionaly I click on a program to open it up and get the error "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have permission the appropriate permission to access item."

It is on my home computer, I am the owner and administrator. For example on my desktop I have the icon for ACDSee, I click on it to open and receive the above error. I go into start programs acdsee click on it and it opens. I right click to access display and receive the error.

This is not a everytime error. Sometimes it works for days and then it stops working. If I reboot the program will open. It is not limited to one program. I can go to start, try to open outlook express and receive the error. I can go to desktop icon, try to open IE and get the same error and then it will start working.

I have SP2 and my firewall is disabled, I run Spydoctor,AVG Free and Spybot, I am also using WinPatrol, all are registered versions. I have a Dell Inspriron 1501 Laptop and my wife has the same computer and does not have this problem.

I have used XP Professional and NOT the Dell restore disk, regardless I receive the same errors with either install I use.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Strange ....if you right click the icon / properties / find target ...does it?
On the security tab ...are all the boxes checked for your user account?

Yep everything is set were it is suppose to be. I have rebooted and have not had the problem since then. I have to think it is a problem with windows, but, have no idea were to look or what to fix.

Further information. I have a gig of ram and a 80 ig hard drive. It is frustrating to click on a program have that error come up and then go into the programs through the start button and open the program.
