In the last few days, I've noticed a problem with double clicking certain files (in particular Word documents). If I double click on the file in Windows Explorer, I get the following message.

Windows cannot find C ................ Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.

However if I try and open the same file from within word, it opens fine.

I've Googled this and found many references to this, but no clear solutions.

There is an MS site that refers to the W32/SIRCAM virus. I've checked all the locations this virus affects in the Registry, and there is no trace of it (I'm running Vista Home Premium). I have Avast 4.8 & Comodo Firewall running all the time and up to date. I'vejust completed a virus scan and its come up clean.

I found a couple of references in this group, but again, no solutions i could see.

I am always installing/uninstalling, so I can't be certain what has changed recently (or even when it started).

I Have A HijackThis log if there is any point in posting it.

    Any comments would be welcome.

    Thanks

    Colin

Can you right click the Word documents, select Open With.... and browse to Word, and have it open from there? If that works, check the box for "always open this type of file with this program". It could be the file association has been knocked out of whack. This can happen for no apparent reason, but if you have used any other Word type of program (like Open Office for example) or tried to open a Word document with a different app, the file associations can get messed up. Associating Word with .doc (or .docx) documents just might straighten this out.

I should have mentioned this earlier.

The File associations are fine. IN fact when I double click on a word file, Word starts to open but it then halts and gives me the error message.

I would say that the problem is with Word, and not with the documents. I don't use Word much, but it might have a 'repair' feature. Also, if you could post the exact error message, or post a screen shot of it, we may be abl to track down some more accurate information for you.

    Hi

What dlb is refering to more is Word or MS Office has its own repair feature, so open Word and click the Orb and choose Word Options > Resources > and click Diagnose next to run Microsoft Office Disgnostics.

Do you have any other issues opening Excel files or other Office files?

Do you have issues opening say an image/picture file?

When did this start happening and was it after installing any new software, if it was.. what was the software you installed?
