windows could not start ?

    i have vista oprating system dual boot with xp,they where working fine ,recently i have tried to shrink one partion using GParted shrink tool,
    but i figured out that xp dualboot could not started because the following file is missing or corrupt:
    <windows root>system32\hal.dll.
    please re-install a copy of the above file.
    i tried to search this at microsoft knowledge base but non of theose could help me.
    anyone can help me recover this file

    While you can copy the original hall.dll from somewhere else to the pc, it has to contain hardware info of your pc or else, you'll see the error over and over. In shorts, you're not gonna be able to fix it.

    Try repair install. Insert windows cd, boot it up, when asked, select repair. It still may not work that way though.

    Let it be a lesson learned: don't mess with partitions unless you have backup of your data.
