Windows Defender autoscan won't run

    I have Windows Defender set up to auto scan daily at 1:00 pm, but ever since I did some malware removal last month (see this thread - http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=219451), Windows Defender hasn't been doing the autoscan. What is up? I tried re-setting the autoscan and saving, but to no avail...

    Make sure your machine is not hibernating - AFAIK, Defender won't autoscan in sleep mode...

    Hi

    In Defenders Options menu > Automatic Scanning check that you have ticked the Update Definitions before scanning and untick Scan only when system is idle > click Save.

    You may have another process running that is blocking automatic scanning.

    No, machine is definitely not hibernating.

    I have the Update Definition before scanning box checked.

    BUT, I can't find a Scan only when system is idle box anywhere....am I blind, or could this be the problem?

    Ah I only checked the location in Windows 7 version of defender so maybe different to XPs (is that the OS on this machine), actually it is just booted an XP PC, not used it in years the XP client version, sadly does not have the idle option, which is a pity.

    I would then check any of your other applications as in antivirus, defrag apps etc and make sure none are set for a default scan at the time of your Defender as it may make Defender stop its, try to schedule the Defender scan for another time (6hrs difference to what its set at now) and see if it runs ok.

    Have you uninstalled Defender and then re-downloaded and re-installed it, maybe your malware corrupted it somehow?

    Sorry, I forgot to mention that my OP was XP.

    Well, I set the scan to run a 6:00 pm....and 6 pm has come & gone with no scan started.

    I do have Avira AV set to run at 2:00 am daily, but that has never interfered with Defender before. Defender always ran at 1 am, and Avira always ran at 2 am.

    Could all the system cleaning that I had to do to get rid of the malware, could that have somehow "cleared" something or deleted something that had to do with running the defender scan?

    No, I have not tried uninstalling & then reinstalling Defender....yet. If ya'll don't have any other ideas, then I will try doing that.
