I got a voicemail today from someone identifying themselves as being with Windows Defender through Major Geeks. I bought Windows Defender last year, but deleted it over the winter because it was such a pain. Now I am being told to call a number to 'stop auto debit' of $199 or $299 (couldn't write down details), & I have to be at my computer to fill out a form for them to cancel my program. Obviously not a computer geek here. Has anybody had this issue? Doesn't sound so legit to me...

This is a well known tech support scam, they are just trying to con people into thinking they have to pay for a free service. Windows Defender has always been and will remain free.

Firstly there is no cost for windows Defender if you have paid for it then you have been scammed. It is free and comes with windows and is turned on by default unless you install another antivirus which then it will replace windows Defender.

The real problem here Peggy is that you are responding on the phone to calls from people you don't know. Unless you are completely satisfied that the caller is genuine just put the phone down, regardless of what they offering, threatening or wanting payment for. These crooks are making millions from unsuspecting ppl like yourself .

If you suspect a scam call, insist they give you a call back number ( make up any excuse ) then call a KNOWN source regarding the issue. IF you do try to call the number back, I am certain it will not be a real number.

DON'T call anyone who tells you to stop auto debit.
I got a call to get $399 back and another about a $700 Amazon bill. They are all scams.

If you put the items on a credit card, check your credit card bill. If you see anything strange, go to the bank.

Thank you all for your responses. I was in a panic about a debit coming out of my account, having an awful day, & just wasn't thinking straight. I appreciate that you guys are here for help!

Incorrect amazon drivers will call customers if requested by the customer or if there is a gate. And so do the support staff for drivers if the driver can't get a hold of the customer for delivery.

This has nothing to do with scamming!!

Amazon drivers calling you is not the same as "Amazon calling". (Amazon does not have my phone number and communicates to me for all purchases by email. They also address me by my registered name. A phone call to me, without using my name and asking me to press a number is a scam phone call.)
