Microsoft Windows Defender is still in BETA stage, which means it is currently in a testing phase before it reaches the FINAL stage.

You probably just discovered a bug, that will be corrected in the final version.

You can either try the BETA2 (If you are not already using that), or uinstall the product and stop BETA testing.

I have sneeky suspicion that the update site for Defender is down at present for some users hence that error, I just got it on 1 pc, which has in the past updated fine. OR a glitch with I may have a work around for but need to test on the pc thats affected.

to manually update you need to click the little down triangle next to the ? icon and choose About Windows Defender and then Check for Updates.

Try this... goto Program Files > Windows Defender and on the AS_Sigs file right click it and choose Repair then check your definition dates should be as of this post 1.13.1276.3 Build on 15/02/2006

I got the error, and basically dumped it until the next fix is done for it. Basically removed from my system, and reinstalled AVG.

VERY IMPORTANT windows defender is not, NOT a antivirus application but an antispyware application (replacing MS Antispyware) and has some background analysis programs running. You should not have dumped AVG which is an antivirus application and for different purposes entirely!!!

I had OneCare running at the time, and because of the error with Defender and problems with OneCare Beta, removed them both, until this error that is currently being seen by users with Windows Defender is resolved. Also April is fast approaching.

Is there a huge difference between AntiSpyware and Defender?

I'm tossing up whether to "upgrade" or not?

personally, sleepless one, I am not certain but it is Windows latest antispyware application and the MS Antis.. was getting good reviews from some reputable sources, here, Langa.com, etc.

The full scan (defender) takes a lot longer but there is a new engine and more features with the defender, have a look:

    http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

    or

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...afa4-f7f14e605a0d&displaylang=en&Hash=DXDFYCC

I found the MSAnti.... was a pain to update and was never certian if it had done it and I suffered subtle instability (not sure if product or compatibility issues). I think support for this product may be withdrawn and an auto update to defender will be expected. I suppose the important ques is do you want to participate in the beta stage or wait till more of the bugs have been sorted?

I would change if it had new features, but it doesn't sound like it?

    Not really.

They simplified the UI for those who thought it looked to complicated. Also, "stream-lined" it for VISTA.

In the end, no "pop-ups", unless you set the advanced option, in settings.

Also, no systray icon, now it is running as a service.

Updates, are via "auto update (windows updates)" OR Help, about, check for updates.

I may as well stick with AntiSpyware till it runs out in July. Thanks.
