    I've tried several times to install windows defender on my machine and on a buddies machine, and it has caused nothing but problems!!!!:mad:

    It installs fine, but...when you open it up and tell it to check for updates...first of all, it doesn't show any kind of progress indicator (atleast not that I've seen yet) and it says it is connecting to check for updates, but it just sits there and sits there and sits there, until you realize that it is locked up!!! The mouse doesn't move, the hourglass is still there and I have to do a cold restart with the power button, because alt-cntrl-del doesn't work either!!

    So Ok....no big deal, right.....wrong!!!! Now when it restarts...it freezes as soon as it gets to the desktop!! The mouse won't move and the anti-virus and none of the couple of other startup programs, won't load!!

    So I decided to go into safe mode...and un-install it there...well...safe mode freezes also, as soon as it loads the desktop, before it even gets the icons loaded!!!!

    Basically....I'm just curious if anyone else is having and/or heard of others having such problems with this program?? If so...do you know what the fix is or why it is doing such!?!?! I'm trying to avoid having to do a system restore...but it's not looking good for the home team!!!!

    Any Ideas????

    I haven't heard of this yet but if you can get back in to the sys go to the folder in;

    C > Programs > Windows Defender

    Locate the and right click on the "AS Sigs.MSI" file and select repair.

    As far as updating goes I only get a little ballon, when trying manually, stating it's searching for updates and then whatever action it takes (updates or no new updates avail). Otherwise once on sys it becomes part of the automatic updates from MS and half the time you may not even realise that it is being updated (little yellow sheild!)

    Hope this helps in some way. It does work fine if you can get it working.

    Thanks for the input...but right now...I'm trying to get the system stable, period!! I did get back in and uninstalled defender, but it is still freezing after doing something (browsing, running a scanner, etc.,etc) So until I find what is making freeze...and I mean COMPLETELY locking up...I'm going to just wait to try what you said, once I re-install it. And like I said...all of the above NEVER happened until after I installed Defender!!

    Just incase it might help someone trigger an idea...it is a Gateway:rolleyes: 5000XL with windows XP Sp2.

    Thanks for the help so far...if anyone has anymore ideas...I'm all ears!!!
