    Hi,

I have seen this question asked, but not really answered, so I'm going to give it another go.

Back in March my computer let me know I had "important" security updates.

One of them was the addition of Windows Defender.

So I did a little research and found out it's a security program that Microsoft was pushing.I have heard it mentioned that win defender comes with eth OS. This most definitely never came with my OS, It was installed in March this year, was never on it before then.

(I have vista on this computer. It situations like these that make me want to convert to Linux).

I like trying new things, so I decided to give it a whirl.

Big mistake! I find it to be fairly useless and a system hog.

And now I cant uninstall it. I don't want it just disabled, I want it, and all its files, gone permanently.

I would prefer not to have to do a system restore and undo all the changes I've made to this computer since then. I've spent months getting the rest of it just to where I want it.(I am a gamer)

Vista does not show this nasty program in the add/remove programs.

So, I need to know how to remove it, without a system restore.

Please help!(but only if you can tell me how to remove it, I already know how to disable it):confused

    Hi,
Windows Defender is inbuilt in Vista OS and I don't think that it can be removed from the OS, though having a little look around I found that someone says that they have successfully removed it by doing this.....

you can uninstall windows defender if you wish all you need is to add the Take ownership button to the right click menu.

http://www.howtogeek.com/downloads/TakeOwnership.zip (I have scanned this file with AVG and Malwarebytes and it is clean )

download that run the Reg file then go to program files right click on windows defender press take ownership then delete.

don't know if it will work or not, so you may be best waiting to see if anyone else can pitch in with a solution other than just disabling it.

found a better run through for it.....

    1. Run a privileged Command prompt, by navigating to the ‘C:\Windows\System32′ directory and right clicking ‘cmd.exe’ to ‘run as administrator’. Next type ‘Sc Delete WinDefend’ to delete the disabled service. You should receive the ‘[SC] DeleteService SUCCESS’ notification. Reboot

    3. Add “Take Ownership” to explorer right-click menu in Vista. Download and unzip the files contained in the zipfile.

    http://www.howtogeek.com/downloads/TakeOwnership.zip

Double-click the InstallTakeOwnership.reg file and click through the prompts. No reboot necessary.

    4. Navigate to C:\Program Files and right-click on the ‘Windows Defender’ folder to gain ownership.

    5. Right click the following registry key, take ownership and Full Control to delete and purge the Windows Defender leftover shortcuts from the ‘Control Panel’ and ‘Start Menu’

How to grant Full Control of a registry key
    1.Open Registry Editor
    2. Click the key to which you want to grant Full Control.
    3. On the Edit menu, click Permissions.
    4. Under Group or user names, click the user to whom you want to grant Full Control of your registry key.
    5. Under Permissions for name, where name represents the name of the user to whom you are granting Full Control of the key, select the Allow check box for Full Control.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ControlPanel\NameSpace\{D8559EB9-20C0-410E-BEDA-7ED416AECC2A}

    6. A search of the registry will show up many more instances of Windows Defender leftovers. These entries can be deleted if you take ownership and Full Control before trying to delete them.
