    Hi, I had to run a repair/reinstall of XP Home on a PC because Windows would not start up. During the reinstall, at the point where Windows restarts I got the message " Windows did not start up properly the last time it was started". I selected start windows normally. The PC finished the reinstall proceess. Now everytime the computer is restarted or shutdown and powered back up I get the Windows did not start up properly message. I can select start normal and everything works fine. The computer seems to shutdown normally when you power it off. The message keeps appearing everytime it is powered on. I have turned off all items in startup and turned off all none Microsoft services. The message keeps appearing. Downloaded all updates from MS Updates. Thanks for your help in advance

    Check your boot.ini file. It's on C: and you need to enable the viewing of hidden files/folders, and the viewing of system files/folders in order to see it. Open it in Notepad. It should look EXACTLY like this:
    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

    If you have any other switches (switches are anything with a slash at the beginning; /noexecute is a swtich) post them here and we'll tell you if they're needed or not, or you can Google the switch and research its uses yourself.

    I checked the boot.ini file, it is exactly as you posted. There are not any other switches. Do you have any other suggestions. Thanks

    This message appears if you make changes in msconfig. I have a selective startup instead of a normal (there is a choice of three items). At some point in the loading process, you will get a screen with a box that you need to check - this turns off the message that you see about windows not starting up properly.
