I posted a thread last week named 'defrag new hard disk problems'.

Now i have a new problem where Windows Disk Defragmenter doesnt work. It starts up fine but when i press the analyse or derfrag button nothing happens.

I used to have diskpeer lite but un installed it when it kept giving me a pop up about chkdsk is scheduled to run or run chkdsk first and then try defrag again (as outlined in other thread).

I tried the suggestions in some of the other similar threads such as running chkdsk f: /f but all it does is delete files etc and once the pc starts up i have the same problem again.

    What happens when you:
    1. Open My Computer.
    2. Right-click the local disk volume that you want to defragment, and then click Properties.
    3. On the Tools tab, click Defragment Now.
    4. Click Defragment.

If you were getting messages about needing to run chkdsk, then there's a good chance that you have some deep file system problems, and the drive may be failing. You should download the free diagnostic tool from the drive maker's web site and run the extended advanced test to be sure the drive is healthy. Good luck!

    Hi all,

    Thanks for replies.

For future reference what it ended up being was that my mother board did not support the new drive. i updated the mother board and everything is ok now.

Did you say you were trying to defrag a new drive?

This is not normally needed or a good idea.

You should also always do the housekeeping before defragmentation and / or check disk.
That is delete all temporary material, internet cache, recyclebin, etc.

Defrag works best from safe mode. Don't forget to close all programs including screensavers or defrag will keep restarting.

I never recommend 3rd party defraggers as these can damage Windows files, that Microsoft purposely leaves alone. You are unlikely to be able to recover from a defrag that has failed this way.
