I am running Windows 7 ultimate with a Q6700 CPU and a GTX295 GPU, my windows experience is excellent except for the primary disk operations.

Is there any way i can improve this or do i need to buy a faster disk ?

    thanks
    Bill

I think the windows score is a joke However if you really want to improve the score I think you would need to go SSD or 10krpm

I have run tests with other applications to stress test the pc but it always falls on the same point.

WEI is changing to take into concideration new technologies, and HDDs are the weak point at present as mentioned SSDs are the quick drives that will bump up that score, 10K drives wont as I have 2 in raid and my HDD score in W7 is 5.9 for HDD and that is the max you would need to go to 15K SCSI or SSD.

TBH I dont take much stock in the WEI score its no different to any other benchmark and should be taken with a pinch of salt, good indicator of performance for laptops but when you have a high end system its not perfect, unless you take the stance that we are using old technologies still and need to move forward, but doing this and going SSD to make a score better....... is it worth it??

I do have 2 SSDs in a PC but not moved them to RTM Windows 7 and my main PC yet.

Thank David an pclover for the replies.
I am not really bothered about score, it was just to get bragging points to say "look how fast my system is"

Later this year or in January i will have an i7 950 CPU and a good i7 board (not decided yet) so then i will be looking to get this thing running like a train.

    Hi Bill

Your top end score in WEI are fine, but if you wish to increase that score in the drive index, then SCSI or SSD is the only way to increase the overall score as WEI takes the lowest score at the final result.

If deciding to go SSD then do read up on them and go for a 2nd geneation drive as the 1st generation ones dont have fantastic controllers, however SSD is not cheap to get into at this point in time, should become more main stream in a year or so as the tech becomes more fine tuned (like HDDs have become now).

I have to agree with Halos comments here. They are still "working" on the SSD and 2nd generation or even later must be considered.

The Intel X25-M G2 (where G2 means 2nd generation) for example is arguably one of the most cost effective but high end performing drives in the market (enthusiasts love them).

But with the release of Win7 they had to release new firmware to take advantage of the OS but somehow "flashing" the SSD ended up with a large % in the community "bricking" their SSDs.

A lot of bugs to still be resolved and I wouldn't touch a SSD for another 6 months until they become "cheaper" and more stable.

The WEI is nothing more than when we were younger and pissing on a fence with a buddy to see who can get the highest, at the end of the day the outcomes are almost trivial and the benchmark itself has not yet been fully resolved to be truly meaningful.
