Windows Explorer crashes, but affects nothing?

    Hey guys,

I'm on my dad's new laptop. By new I mean 2-3 months old... It has this problem where everytime you reboot the PC or open the lid while it's in standby, it comes up with the "Windows Explorer has encountered an error and needs to close." It gives you the option to Send Error Report, etc. It ALWAYS does this upon reboot/return from standby.

The funny part is that you can click "Don't send error report" or whatever it says, and the task bar and all windows open will disappear while it reloads whatever it needs (assuming its explorer.exe) and then everything looks just like it did. Open websites don't close, documents don't close, etc, it all just goes away for 2-3 seconds and all I can see is my desktop wallpaper (no taskbar, shortcuts, etc.)

I've run the following programs with latest updates:

    avast! anti-virus
    Spybot
    Ad-Aware
    Spyware Doctor
    Trend Micro online scan
    CCleaner

All come back clean. Like I said, this doesn't affect any work that gets done, but it's just annoying that it does it everytime you open the computer. Kind of a psychological annoyance :p

Any ideas on what to do? The computer doesn't appear to have any other problems, so I'm really doubting if it's spyware/viruses. What do you think?

I would first suggest taking a look at Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Event Viewer and see if there are any errors posted there and follow-up or post back. Hope that helps a little

I exported the list of application errors and system errors. Let me know what you think.

This issue can be caused by shell extensions that are installed when you install Allaire Homesite or Cold Fusion

Found for Error 1002 from your log.

To my knowledge, neither of those have ever been on this PC. I also checked the link you provided in the next post, and haven't found anything related yet.

This is the report from your log

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: Winlogon
    Event ID: 1002
    Description:
The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted.

I come up with this link from the page I first posted.

Does this mean it's not for me? I'm running Windows XP MCE...

    That page says:
I searched for the update it talks about (#841356) and I can't find it on my PC. Before I do anything further, I wanted to make sure that the "applies to" thing means it's not for MCE.
