Windows Explorer Displays Image Files As Icons, Rather Than As Thumbnails. How To Fix?

In Windows Explorer, why do most (but not quite all) of my image files display as icons (see .jpg and .bmp icons below), rather than as thumbnails.

Yes, in WE’s banner, under the View tab, I tried to select some size-version (Extra large, Large, Medium or Small) of Thumbnails, but they’re simply not there anymore. Instead, those size-versions are now available only for icons (see Picture Tools graphic below).

This problem started after I upgraded my Microsoft OneDrive and installed Microsoft Office 365, but it didn’t start immediately after those software changes, and I don’t know that the problem is related to this.

But for the sake of completeness, in case it is related, here are the particulars on that:

I have Microsoft OneDrive with 1TB of cloud storage. Sometimes after I run Advanced SystemCare or Wise Care 365, OneDrive is out of sync, and I have to resync it, but that’s not a big deal.

I also have Microsoft Office 365. I hate it, because it runs on Microsoft’s servers, rather than on my own PC, so it’s as slow as hell, but it’s affordable.

Here’s an odd wrinkle on this: sometimes the problem goes away — I’m not sure if my tinkering made it go away — but the problem always returns soon.

I’m running Win10 Pro. See my signature in my profile for a fairly complete description of my system.

    Thanks for any help.

    OK, got it.

    • File Explorer >
    • View tab >
    • Options drop-down menu >
    • Change folder and search options (only option) >
    • (in Folder Options dialog box) View tab >
    • Advanced settings menu >
    • uncheck “Always show icons, never thumbnails” and
    • check “Display file icon on thumbnails” >
    • OK button

    Thanks!

I don’t know why you couldn’t see my “Signature” section under the “Information” tab in my profile. Are you sure you were logged in at the time?
