Windows Explorer Failure

I randomly get an explorer failer error. It gives me a choice of debug or closing. It usually happens after finishing a game. Once I get this error several things in windows don't work. If I do a repair will I lose programs? I know a clean install removes everything, but what about a repair. I might just have a corrupt file or something. Thanks

 

Do these two first .... open up CMD and type sfc /SCANNOW
let that run, once thats finished insert yur installation cd and open up the repair console and type chkdsk /r ... let that run, check for updates and see if yur system still does it .....

 

Thanks, I will try that before I do anything else. It seems to happen randomly, but most of the time when I finish a game and go back into windows.
