Windows Explorer problem in 98se

I seem to have a problem with my Windows Explorer in Windows 98se. From time to time, I get a message saying
"This program has performed an illegal function and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor".
This happens regularly, and furthermore I have issues with other programs and Kernel32.dll
Is there any way to fix this kind of problem with a downloadable program???
I have used a free registry cleaner from this site but it hasn't affected things at all.

 

You might try to manually restore the registry to a previous date and time. It should give you five (5) options to choose from, try to pick one before the problems started.

NOTE: (After you restore the registry, you may need to reinstall some programs.)

1. Start your computer, press and hold CTRL, and then choose Safe Mode Command Prompt Only from the Windows 98 Startup menu.

2. At the MS-DOS prompt, type cd\windows\command, and then press ENTER. Where windows is the name of the folder in which Windows is installed.

3. At the C: prompt, type scanreg /restore, and then press ENTER.

4. Select the previous registry you want to restore, and then press ENTER. A properly working registry has the word "Started" next to the date.

5. When you receive notification that you restored a properly working registry, press ENTER to restart your computer.

Thanks for taking the time to suggest this, but unfortunately the 4 previous registrys that are offered are in the last few days, and my problem has been for a few months. I'm not sure it's a registry problem, either.......it was just a stab in the dark.
